Professor Barbara Evans holds the chair in Public Health Engineering in the School of Civil Engineering. Her research activities centre on sanitation, hygiene and water services. Her work has focused for many years on the equitable provision of services to low-income communities in both low- and high-income countries. She has led major global studies on the management and disposal of faecal sludge, and the provision of resilient sanitation in dense urban areas. Recently she has been leading an international team developing indicators for the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 and the Global Goal on Adaptation for climate-resilient water supply, sanitation and hygiene. Her team at Leeds are also in the forefront of developing new empirical data and better scientific understanding of greenhouse gas emissions from sanitation and wastewater systems to improve the methods and estimates produced by the IPCC and Nationally-determined Contributions (NDCs) produced by governments.
